Types Of Camera Moves-Part-2

This is a small introduction to types of camera movescamera shots and angles involved in film making. All the basic and fundamental camera moves are mentioned below. Try to follow them and understand them well. These are very fundamental shots in shot making.Without help of these shots u can't able to do anything.

Establishing Shot

An establishing shot is nothing but a shot used to establish a new scene usually it will be the first shot of a new scene covering all the properties and set up. Mostly wide shot are extreme wide shot is used to film these kind of establishing shots.

Point Of view Shots(P.O.V)

Point Of View ShotAn point of view shot is nothing but explaining something from a character perspective. And helps the audience to interact with the character on the screen. Usually an P.O.V shot begins with a character looking off screen after that we will cut to the object the character is looking at. Editing plays a very important role in film making.

Over The shoulder Shot

Over The Shoulder ShotThis kind of shot will be usually used in a conversation scene where two people converse. For example, if u going to shoot a scene involving your male lead and female lead sitting opposite to each other and conversing a camera will be placed above the character's shoulder to shoot the other. Here, partially shoulder comes into the frame. If u have a doubt please have a look at the video. Below i am posting a pic for the sack of understanding.

Reverse Angle

This is a very important shot to be focus with, and there is some specialty for this shot in film making. Usually, when you frame a scene there are some basic rules to be followed by any cameramen are a cinematographer. One of such rule is 180 Degree Rule. I will be explaining all this shot composition rules in my next posts. For now, u shot know that Reverse  Angle Shot violates 180 Degree rule. This Reverse Angle shot is just similar to a over the shoulder shot which will be usually used for conversation scenes. Reverse angle video is available in the videos just have a look. Camera will be placed on the opposite side of each character and in editing we can give a feeling to the viewer that your characters are really conversing in front of him.

Handheld Shots

Camera will be handled with the hands as the title reflects and as a result the shot will be shaky, jerky which brings a raw effect to the viewer. This shot gives an real effect that the viewer will feel that he is also a part of the movie and not watching it from an isolated place.

Bird's Eye View Shot

Bird's Eye View ShotThis just an unnatural angle just like a over the head shot or an Arial shot.At first the viewer will find difficult to find any object because of a strange angle created by the camera but it will create a feeling to the viewer that he is watching all the action from the top. Usually Alfred Hitchcock movies are best examples for these kind of shots.

Tracking Shots

Tracking Shot As the name suggests these kind of shots are usually used for following the subjects while on the move or in motion. Usually these kind of scenes can be shot with the help of dolly's are trolleys following the subject. For example, if u want to show if two people are walking this shot will be useful. Camera movement can be from any where from back, side and front etc.,

Crane Shots

Crane ShotsA crane shot is nothing but a dolly shot in air. Many of u know what a crane is and how it look like. A heavy metallic piece will be place where a camera will be attached to it and this piece will help in the free movement of the camera to follow the object or the subject. A skilled operator balances the crane.

Eye Level Shot

This is just an neutral shot. Camera will be placed in such a way that the viewer is observing the scene. For example, the actors faces will be leveled to focus. The camera will be placed exactly to the head level i.e five to six feet from the ground.

Aerial Shot

I think u people are familiar with this else this is nothing but an extension to a crane shot. But instead of a crane here a helicopter will be used and will be shot from an height to give the viewer the topography of the setup from an height. A chopper can go anywhere, where as a crane have some limitations.

Types Of Camera Moves

This is an connecting post to my previous post about types of camera moves and angles. Now i am going to tell u about some more film shots which can make your film more dynamic and cinematic. U should have sound knowledge about these shots which can be helpful in your shot division process. These two posts are very crucial and can make so much of difference to your film making style and script writing too. Because when u are writing your script u should be able to visualize your idea and should be able to keep on the paper and for that u must know the terminology of each and every shot u are going to shoot. So lets get into the topic.

  •  Dolly Shots
  • Tilt Shots
  • Handheld Shots
  • Eye Level Shots
  • Panning Shots
  • Arial Shots
  • Pedestal Shots
  • Tracking Shots
  • Crane Shots
  • Zoom
  • Rack Focus
  • Bird's Eye View Shots
  • Oblique/Canted Angle Shots

All the above are the camera movements which are necessary to be known for a script writer or a wanna be directors. when i have started this blog an year back i am only interested in scriptwriting and story construction for a film. But now, my interest have expanded in such a way that i am feeling to know each and everything related to film making. In this process, i have come across so many new topics related to camera, scriptwriting, rules to follow while u frame a scene, shot division etc., but the thing is that if u search the net u will get all the topics related to scripting but all the other things like shot division, cinematography related topics are very less when compared. So, i am planning to present all the topics which i have come across but it might take time because of my personal issues.. please do follow the blog it will surely help u to do better ur script and film making abilities.

Okay, now i shall be teaching u each and every shot i have mentioned above:

Pan Shots: This kind of shot will be useful when u want to show distance between two objects or when u want to follow the subject. If u want to be a good panner just get a Tripod and practice the pan shot many times at different speeds. Tripod helps u in smooth movement of camera camera.

Camera Movement: The camera movement will be Horizontal from left to right or vise versa. Don ever get confused with a Pan and a Tilt.

Tilt Shots: Tilt shot will be just like a pan shot like following the object or subject and the added advantage of a tilt is that u can able to show the height of an object to.

Camera Movement: A pan shot need a horizontal movement of the camera where as a tilt need to be vertical that is the only difference.

Pedestal Shot: It will be just similar to a Tilt but not exactly a Tilt shot. Just moving the camera up and down to get the perfect height. For example if u want to show a child then u will adjust the height of yoyr camera to the same as the child. Are if u want to show a tall guy who is 6'6 height then u will adjust the height to his level. This kind of shot is known as pedestal shot.

I will be posting remaining shot details in my next post. Keep going. And don forget to comment that will help me to improve and to write better. Any suggestions are advices are welcomed. please write to me on my contact form. i will get back to u.

This kind of shot will be used at the begging of the film, or to establish a set..or a battle field where everything should come into the frame. This shot is very helpful to show the entire setup.

Medium Angle Shot: The camera will be placed somewhat distant from the object and some part of the set is visible partially..This kind of shot is maily used  when two people converse without moving camera.

Close Up: Many of u might have know what a close up ahot means..camera will be placed very near to the object and will be only focusing the object probably over the waist..this shot will help u to convey a feeling of your character and will make viewer more attached with the character since it will give a feeling to the viewer that he is the part of that scene.

Extreme Close UP: This shot will be canned placing the camera very close to the object such that iy will be focused on a particular part are a thing(EG: Eyes,Head) so that the viewer can get the extreme details about the character.

Types Of Vertical Camera Angles

Types of vertical camera angles are classified as:

High Angle Shots: This shot will be very handy to convey the power of the character..to show so many properties in your set...are helps in to shoot shots like battle field where u can show entire set from top..here camera will be placed high above the object so that everything will be visible around the object.
