Framing Your Shots-Cinematography Rules

Hello guys, today we are going to deal about basic cinematography rule called framing your shots. In my last post i have discussed about rule of thirds one of the basic rule in framing and composition techniques but i have received lot of mails asking me to explain about what is framing and composition actually. So, this post is meant for the newbies who doesn't have basic knowledge about basic framing and composing techniques in cinematography. Framing and composing makes your shot more balanced and interesting. But, remember there is no hard and fast rule to use all these rules in every shot. Just be creative and use wisely because in filmmaking u got to shoot very complicated shots if needed. But always know the rule and break it :) Okay now coming back to the concept of framing your shots.

Framing

Always try to compose your shot with a frame around it. A frame is nothing but which looks like a boarder for your shot. For example, you are planning to shoot a mountain from some where and it is surrounded  by lots of other objects such as trees, sky, etc., u can shoot that very shot of mountains in many number of ways, well let me explain in detail.

Framing A shot With Examples

  1. You can choose to shoot that shot of that particular mountain alone..it looks normal..
  2. Okay now just try to think in a different way, u are looking at that mountain through a window, now use that window as a frame for your shot and shoot the mountain..it looks different.

Differences Between A Framed And Unframed Shot

Due to lack of time am using photographs to demonstrate, as soon a s possible i will get u the framed shots from films which can help u to understand better.
  • What are the things that are separating the first snap with the second..
  • First snap just look okay..nothing very interesting, but whereas second one is framed with a window..that is nothing but viewer is looking at an object through some other object.
  • Even though window is a frame it doesn't make viewer distracted. And added more range to your shot.
  • Thirdly, it added more depth to your snap.

Tips For Framing Your Shots

Be Creative While Choosing Your Frame

Always look at your surroundings while composing or framing your shot, try to use some object as a frame to your shot. It can be anything, tress, windows, arches anything. Allow viewer to look at your subject through some other object that makes a fabulous frame for your shot.

Choose Your Frame Effectively

Always remember, when u choose a frame it should help in creating some interest to your shot, it should never dominate your subject. Always use contrast colors for framing your subject i.e if our subject is darker then frame with a light foreground. If your subject is light then use a more darker frame.

Make Your Shot More Attractive

Yes, always try to choose a frame that can help u in narrating your shot or a scene. Use according to your scene demands. For example if u want to establish in your scene then just try to narrate with your frame waht i mean to say is just try to symbolize with the help of your frame.

Use Depth Of  The Field

I will write a separate post about the terminology used in photography. When i start that topic i will explain what is Depth of field in photography and cinematography. Okay now simply i will explain how to use depth of field while framing your shot, use small aperture to focus your foreground else vise versa, use big aperture to focus your subject.

Hope this post explained you all about how to frame your shots in a balanced and in a interesting manner. Please feel free to comment and share your views.

Rule Of Thirds

Rule Of Thirds Grid LinesHello friends, today we are going to discuss about Rule of thirds which is a basic and fundamental rule in both photography and in cinematography. Before going into the topic am repeating again..rules are ment to be broken..but learn the rule first and break it in that way it will give lot more balanced effect. So, please don't neglect these rules and am stressing again, if u have any plans to become DOP( Director Of Photography), or a cinematographer then these rules are must and also for wanna be directors. Okay, now coming back to the topic, These rules or other wise called as Framing and Composition rules. It's nothing but we are planning to frame a shot in a balanced manner or composing a shot in a interesting manner. Rule of thirds, Head room, nose room, chin etc., are the major topics to be discussed and i will be discussing about the other  topics related to rule of thirds in my upcoming posts.

Why To Use Rule Of Thirds

Rule Of ThirdsU can get a doubt why to use this rule and how it is helpful to me..well let me explain, Rule of thirds is nothing but we are dividing a snap(in photography) or while framing a shot we are dividing the whole frame into thirds i.e into nine equal parts both horizontally and vertically. When u do this, u will get four intersection points where we have to place the main subject or object. Again u can ask me why should i only place the subject or object in that point of intersection area only..okay, this is all because to get more balanced and interesting shot or a snap. Our human eye has a tendency to look some spots in a snap.. that when we look at some thing our eyes will firstly spot some areas in a snap those areas or nothing but the area present in between those intersection areas. So, if u can able to frame a shot using this rule u have done your best in framing the shot no need to look back for other things.

Possibilities Of Using Rule Of Thirds

Okay now when it comes to practicality i will tell u the possibilities of using this rule. Okay, u can ask me how can i divide a frame in to nine equal parts while u shoot. There's no other way other than to image those lines while u frame the shot. But, if u are an independent filmmaker and u have an aim to do lot number of short films then u can go for a good camcorder which contains an option called "Framing". What this option will do is, u can get those horizontal and vertical lines on your LCD screen of your camcorder so that u can place your image/object in the ares u want to frame. And, one more important note, there's no need to frame each and every scene and shot. Why we do is only to bring some balance in the scene nothing more than that. So, it's not a must for each and every shot. But, always remember when u frame a shot always think before twice or thrice about few things like:

What's the important thing u are going to frame in the particular shot. For example, u want to shoot a shot like a guy is standing on a sea shore looking at the sky in the evening( Sunset) time. When u plan to shoot this shot first of all u have to fix about the major thing about your subject first, of u feel that it about nature u want to project in the shot then your subject becomes sky. else, if u feel that u have to give stress on the guys feelings then your subject becomes that guy. So be very precise about what u are going to frame.

Framing a shot is only to bring beauty to your project. So, don't break the rule without purpose. Because u may loose the beauty of your shot. Always, remember breaking a rule should always bring some positiveness to your project it shouldn't be a topic for a negative discussion. Experiment in a positive way. U may fail but it should be purposeful.

This is all about rule of thirds. I will discuss about nose room and head room in my next post. Until then keep smiling and post your feedback's through commenting system or on Facebook page.
