Cinematography - An Important Element of Movie Making

Cinematography is considered as the most important part of movie making. As there were no sounds involved in the motion pictures in the early days of film making, it was entirely focused on the picture. There wasn’t a separate department for cinematography, but with the new technology and sounds being enabled, the demand for a good cinematographer has increased.

With the advent of artificial lighting, the demand for a cameraman was greater. The celluloid films that were used also were available in different speeds such as films of low speed with ISO 50 was present and even higher speeds of ICO 800 were available, giving an advantage to the cameraman to continue filming at places even with low light.

As the quality of the films improved, the formats increased in number. This helped the cameraman to choose the format they wanted to work with from 8 mm to 16mm and 35mm. For a motion picture, 35mm was largely used. This helped the cinematographers to get high-resolution films to deliver better quality.

There are different types of filters used in filming in order to create difference in color and black and while films. Blue, yellow and UV filters are used often. Another major asset used by the cameraman are the lenses which have enabled to create different effects. With invent of macro lens, this has become further easy.

Earlier, cinematography involved recording only motion pictures on the celluloid film but with modern trends has enabled to use these techniques on the digital cameras which are currently being used. Presently the success of a movie or a film depends equally on the cinematographer. They are responsible for the amazing visual creations we see in the theaters.

A cinematographer requires a lot of passion and equal amounts of techniques and hard work. Earlier, the job of a cinematographer was to only record it on films but with the new digital cameras which are now available, a cinematographer can now explore different effects and create new trends in this stream.

This is definitely an important part of movie making and there are various courses available in different arts’ schools worldwide. If you are passionate about becoming a good cinematographer, you could enroll into any of the course and pursue your dreams of becoming one.

You have to practice many number of things and always follow some rules when writing a dialogue. Writing a dialogue many sound very simple but it should be realistic,to the point and should help in narrating in your main plot in some way. following these small rules makes huge difference to your writing skills. Realistic dialogue is not east to write it needs lot of practice and commitment. A bad dialogue can distract your viewer like any other thing does. Writing skills doesn't come straight away from the sky one have to develop by practice. So, try to follow the following rules and let me know if u know any other tips on writing a dialogue.

Observe Other People While They Talk

Very basic thing writer must have is to observe other things what are going on around him. This habit of observing other people can help in designing your characters, dialogues and for your plots. So, try to observe the other people while they talk for writing realistic and natural dialogue. Listening to this type of conversations need lot of patience and smart thinking because when time arrives u should be in state to recall the conversations and use them in your script with few changes. Don't do this like a work, make it an habit to listen to others.

Should Be Realistic And Natural But Not 100%

Always remember, writing a dialogue for a movie is a challenging job,why because you should give your audience everything that sounds natural but at the same time it should not be too natural. Like what you talk or behave. But it should give an impression that your character is behaving in a natural way. So, to avoid this always filter unnecessary and unwanted words from your dialogue which doesn't add any meaning to your characters needs or which doesn't help to add to your main plot. By doing so your are writing a dialogue which is to the point and natural.

Don't Get Into Head To Head Conversations

Yes this is the most important thing you have to keep in mind when writing a dialogue. In the process of writing without any notice u can get into head to head conversations with your characters. This head to head conversations will come out as a discussion between your characters which can create boredom to your viewer. so, avoid head to head conversations as much as possible.

Don't Add All the Information In Your Dialogues

Yes, never use your dialogue as a information carrier. Always write a dialogue to the point and only provide necessary information that is need for a particular scene or script. Viewer can relate and remember the information what you have provided earlier so don't panic and unfold your twists in your story naturally.

Use  Descriptions In Between

Always try to use insert some sought of descriptions when ever necessary when writing a dialogue. This will break your dialogue and action into two parts and helps to tell your story in a more compact manner. This is a very useful way of writing a dialogue which helps to filter your action and description in two different ways.

Follow Proper Grammar Rules And Punctuation

Always remember, punctuate your dialogue in a correct way. A full stop and a comma can change the rhythm of your script. Punctuation have lot of importance when your write your dialogue. So, be careful about your grammar and punctuations.

Use  Dialogue Tags That Don't Distract

Always remember, whatever you do while writing a script or a screenplay your target must be your audience. Never make them distracted. Use very simple dialogue tags such as she said/he said rather than she replied it arogantly etc., This might sound good but it will distracts the viewer on to the other things. So, be very careful.

Use Slang's And Dialects In A Appropriate Way

Yes, especially in Andhra Pradesh we have many number of slang's and dialects,So use them in a minimum way so that it should n't bore your viewer. It can be good for designing your character but don't do it in a heavy dosage. It may damage your characters bond with the audience.

Always Revise Twice or Thrice While You Write

Yes always try to read and analyze your dialogue when as many times as possible. Don't ever get compromised with the output quality. Reading again and again brings loads of clarity like where you have gone wrong. what's your character talking, etc., by looking into these minute things you can write more effective dialogue.

How To Become A Great Screenwriter

Hello friends, its a dream for thousands of people to become a good screenwriter in Telugu film industry, this post deals with the same concept of how to become a great screenwriter. But the fact is that we have only handful of screenwriters available for this craft. Especially in our Telugu film industry we don't consider screenwriting as a craft. Every director is a screenwriter here. But the original fact is that script writing is a craft where an individual need to specialize in that very craft to bring quality screenplays on to the screen. So, this post aim is to educate and elevate the importance of this craft of screenwriting and to point out the things that are need to be done to become a good screenwriter. Writing a screenplay is not that easy task when compared to other departments, since script is the heart of a movie, the other departments only helps in supporting your storyline. So, always remember this and try to learn this craft to write screenplays. Here are some tips for doing so.

Educate Yourself

I have told you this concept in my old posts too guys, always remember especially in the field of cinema you are always a student. You will definitely will learn something everyday. So, don't ever feel that you know everything and superior its can damage your career. Always try to do some research on your subjects. Try to learn new things. Work on your subjects. Try to learn basics of your craft. If possible get into deeply. Always be attentive. Always start your script with appropriate research material. If u have zeal to learn you have loads of ways for it. You have so many books which can help you. If u don't know which books to follow here is the best screenwriting books and recommended books for script writers. And, you have online guru's such as Robert Mckee, Syd field who can teach you lessons about elements of script writing, structure what not. So, don't blindly start a script with out knowing basics. And one more thing please don't treat it as a easy way to become rich.

Collect Movie Screenplays

Yes, collect as many screenplays as possible. Reading different types of screenplays will help you in writing different types of scripts. You can analyze that very particular screenplay by playing the movie in the mute mode. Always it helps you in understanding different writing styles.I know that is a difficult task to get Telugu screenplays.  But try your best to get at least few of them in your bag. It will really help. Here are few Telugu screenplays for download Prasthanam ,Oy,Vinayakudu. Also you can collect few well known Hollywood screenplays at simplyscripts.com

Go To A Film Institute Or A Short Term Course

Yes, its a very basic thing one has to do as a budding screenwriter. Try to attend few classes related to script writing which can help you. By attending these kind of classes u can gain lots of knowledge and minute points about writing a story and how to build it.But here in India we don't have such kind of chance where everyone afford to go to a film institute or a crash course. For those who want to learn key concepts u can browse the net and get loads of data. But reading and understanding may take time. The only best way i can recommend is just buy few books of Syd field if you are an beginner. I don't recommend Robert Mckee since his books are very complicated and have a high profile language so it might not suit someone who is not good at English. Iu u feel that u don't have any problem in understanding high level language then u can go for Robert Mckee but tell you his rules and structures are also very complicated.

Start Writing

A very common thing every screenwriter do is postponement. Never do that if u want to become a screenwriter. Learn the craft, learn the basics and start to implement that by writing a script. Imagination is different and writing the same thing which you have imagined is different. So, always try to write. If u do this regularly then u can find lot of change in your writing abilities. Y am suggesting you all is, i have the same problem in my early days. But i have started writing like what it is..now i can easily write a script that can make a viewer engaged. This is all came into reality with learning things and practicing what i have learnt.

Practice The Art Of Rewriting

Yes, writing is all about rewriting guys, always remember this. The first draft will always look awful. But if u keep on working on it then your script becomes more crispy no matter how many rewrites it takes. Be patient, think smart and take a break if u feel bored but finally try to write something don't stop saying that i am unable to hook the story from this point. Writing writing and writing that is the magic mantra u have to follow. If u stop and feel that u cannot complete the script that's it u can't complete that in your life time. Some times u can't design the characters well, sometimes u can have problem with the dialogues just feel that these are all part and parcel of the game and keep going.

Build Your Network

This is a very critical and very important tip guys, always try to get into touch with production houses, fellow writers etc., try to build a network of yours. I can't suggest you in this aspect since am very poor at it. Though do not neglect this part if u want to become a good screenwriter. Get into touch with reputed producers, try to take appointments with the producers etc., so that it can help you in selling your screenplay easily. These are all the steps to be followed to become a good screenwriter in Telugu film industry.

Many of you mailed be asking about this part like how to enter into film industry, what are the  possible ways. Well, to be frank there is no hard and fast rule for this. But as per my knowledge go's i will discuss few points which may help you in achieving your target. Before going through this topic u can check my previous topic about how to become a successful Telugu film director and how to register your film script at Telugu writers association. Guys always remember one thing, if you want to reach your goal in life it demands some dedication, effort and also last but not least smart thinking. Yes, dedication and hard work in a wrong channel will not take you to a correct destination. So, think smart, act tactfully. Don't be like a blind cat.Make everything count. Always make your presence feel. these are the very basic things to do.

Okay, now coming back to the topic, yes getting into Telugu film industry is a very difficult task. There's no doubt. But, remember it will be only possible if you possess all the things which i have mentioned above. Be very clear about what you want to become and what's your talent is all about. Then, try to gather all the tools which are needed for your journey. Didn't understand..? okay let me tell u more clearly, i will explain with an example, just imagine Anudeep wants to become a director then what should be his target..? very simple to become a film director. But, in order to reach that goal he needs to do number of things. here is the checklist.
  • Write some unique scripts
  • Have sound knowledge about technical stuff
  • Gain some experience under your belt.
  • Follow new film making trends which are being used by top most technicians in the world.
  • Get all the reputed production houses phone numbers, addresses etc.,
  • Try to get an appointment with the managers/ producers.
  • Pitch your screenplay to a Manager/producer.
  • Make it happen.
These are all very simple steps to be followed. But, its not that easy. The same thing applies to the other departments. As per my knowledge go's this is the way to go.

Make Your Portfolio's Ready

If your dream is to be an actor/actress then try to have a good portfolio. This is some what costly, you need to spend at least 10,000-25,000 to make it ready. But its an essential thing for an wanna be actor. So, don't neglect. Also, remember get it arranged with top most cameramen available. This might be a small thing but makes big difference.

Join In a Small Or Big Film Institute

Yes, join in a local film institute which is in your limitations. Y because it can widen your chances.U must need few contacts and connections to get a chance. this can give you some scope in getting some connections, but be very careful sometimes it can take you into wrong tracks. Also, one more use of getting into a film institute is you can add some added skills to your acting. So, its a kind of bridge. Some film institutes have placement facility where you can directly placed under a reputed director as a assistant. So, there is so much of scope in joining a film institute.

Approach A Production House

This might not be that easy, But try to contact the production houses like Geetha Arts,Ramanaidu Studio's etc., through phone and try to get an appointment to pitch your screenplay or script. At least get hold of managers who are working over there to help you out. Many of my friends have done this, so this might be one of the way to approach a production house. Once if your scripts get a green signal u can do miracles. So, always be in touch with production houses.

Maintain Connections

This is a very old and traditional concept, if u know anyone who is working already get in touch with them. Your chance to get into film industry always depends on how many connections u have in the industry. Always play safe. Be friendly with everyone. Maintain some relationships. This can fetch you some chances. This a traditional way of getting into industry which may not work for newbies who doesn't have anyone in the film industry.

Approach A Right Producer

Yes, if u are an aspiring  script writer or a wanna be director then this is the way to go. Its very easy to approach a producer rather than running around useless people. This might be hard to get an appointment with a producer but once if u have a sound script and good communication skills who knows, you are one step away from a debut. So, try to approach right producer with a sound script.

Focus On Different Departments In Filmmaking

I will discuss this topic in detail in my upcoming posts, but for now remember one thing film making is not only about acting, writing and directing..its a package of everything, you have 24 crafts and each and every craft have its importance. So, don't only focus on acting and directing, try to have some knowledge about every craft. Because when compared to acting and direction there will be less competition in other departments. First your target should be to survive then u can flourish. Its that simple :)

Hope you all liked this post. Please let me know your feedback.
